SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Mark Casse said Sunday morning that Classic Empire will not run in the $1 million Haskell and will be pointed instead to the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 25.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Major disappointment for me not to root home Classic Empire here. Love attending the morning workouts Haskell week. Hope he gets back on track ASAP

I know I said it before the Preakness so I don't have much ground to stand on, but I seriously think Classic Empire needs a long break away from the track. He's shown more red flags in the past six months than most horses do in an entire career.

I don't think you're the only one thinking that. :?
I know it's only July, and he may prove us wrong by showing his best before the year is out, but...
I remember how much good the long layoff did California Chrome, reinvigorating him so well he had another HOTY season.

The potential Haskell field consists of Belmont runner-up, Wood Memorial winner and Jersey-bred Irish War Cry; unbeaten Timeline, who won the Grade 3 Pegasus at Monmouth on June 18; Dwyer Stakes winner Practical Joke; Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Battle of Midway; Grade 3 Matt winner McCraken; Girvin, who won the Grade II Louisiana Derby earlier this year and was the runner-up by a nose in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby on June 24; Hence, who won the Grade 3 Iowa Derby on July 7 and the Grade 3 Sunland Derby earlier this year and Impressive Edge, third in the Iowa Derby.

That's an excellent field for the Haskell. Brown must be feeling really good about Practical Joke to run him there.

Do we know who else is going to challenge the big two in the Jim Dandy?

EDIT: Answering my own question... looks like maybe Lee and Patch.

Article from July 9th:

Always Dreaming put in his final breeze at Belmont before shipping to Saratoga on Monday, going 49.45 seconds on the training track, according to trainer Pletcher. The Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner is scheduled to work two more times at the Spa before the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy on July 29.
“It was a good, relaxed work,” Pletcher said. “He seems to be happy. We'd been focused on having him chill out a little bit and I think we've made progress. We kind of backed off after the Preakness and gave him a few easy weeks.”
Preakness winner Cloud Computing, owned by Klaravich and Lawrence, put in his fourth work since winning the middle jewel of the Triple Crown on May 20. Currently aiming for the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy on July 29 at Saratoga Race Course, the Maclean's Music colt covered five furlongs in a bullet-earning 59.01 seconds after getting some unexpected company midway through the breeze, said trainer Chad Brown.

I think Casse said he just wants more time to prepare him, and with his tough campaign and bad luck this year, I am ok with not rushing him. Maybe these few months will be a long enough break.

Likewise, I'm ok with it if it's what's best for him, I was just hoping it wasn't due to more setbacks or anything being amiss.

Takaful just served notice that he could be a big player in the sprint division by winning the 4th at Saratoga, a six-furlong allowance for 3yo + up. It was a decent field and the Bernardini colt just ran off and won by many lengths. I don't remember the time, but it sounded like it was pretty fast.
The TVG dudes think we may see him in the King's Bishop (now the Allan Jerkins) later in the Saratoga meet.

Twisted Tom won the New York Derby despite being slammed into by the place horse Broken Engagement down the stretch. Gutsy win.
