Melbourne Cup 2015: Red Cadeaux breaks down
November 3, 2015 - 3:21PM
Patrick Bartley

Red Cadeaux was injured during the Melbourne Cup.

Three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux has been rushed to a veterinary clinic at Werribee after breaking down close to the winning post during his fifth attempt at winning the Cup.

The horse injured his left fetlock. The leg has been placed in a splint and the horse has been given some relief from the pain, according to chief Racing Victoria vet Brian Stewart.

"Everything is being done for him. He will undergo X-rays in the next hour. I will not speculate on his condition," said Stewart.

Red Cadeaux was the sentimental favourite for the race, given his incredible history at Flemington. No horse has previously finished second in three Cups.

The Ed Dunlop-trained stayer was pulled out of the race in the final stages and a green screen was put up around him.

There was a mixed reaction in the grandstand during the race. The cheers for the winner quickly turned to an eerie hush after people realised one of the horses was injured. People couldn't believe their eyes.

The rising 11-year-old got to his feet, to the cheers of the 100,000-strong crowd.

He was soon loaded onto a horse ambulance and taken to the clinic.

...six jockeys being questioned by stewards about interference...

I wonder if it was during the stretch run? I saw Snow Sky being flanked by several horses drawing even with him on each side, and being squeezed. Then he threw his head up and appeared to stumble...maybe clipped heels? He was eased by Ryan and finished near the back.

This is all I see so far. From The Guardian.
A brief update on Red Cadeaux

Seven are reporting that Red Cadeaux’s condition has been stabilised but there’s still no definitive word yet. Trainer Ed Dunlop and his wife Beckie are at the horse’s side now.

Jockey Frankie Dettori, meanwhile, has been charged with careless riding in the cup and before pleading guilty, said his record spoke for itself. But having heard his case, the stewards have found him guilty, suspending the Italian-born jockey for one month and fined $20,000 for his efforts today.

I know that the connections care about Red Cadeaux, but...
RC hasn't been doing that well in races for a while, and I heard something during the coverage before the Cup that they were hoping that the gelding had one more good race in him. :?
I fear this is another case of 'one race too many,' and I hate that it has happened to this wonderful old horse. :(

Encouraging, but I don't know this guy. Maybe should go to bed now.

I so hope he'll make it and have a happy retirement. Just a few months ago I got a video link on Facebook showing him in his paddock during his last layoff - snorting and playing around like a 2 year old.
