How old is Chautauqua now? Could he have decided that racing is no longer something he wants to do? :?
Refusing to break...twice...sure looks like the horse has made his opinion known. :P

Chautauqua was foaled September 20, 2010. I'm not sure what to make of that funny look on his face, ears straight up.

He's more interested in the camera person than the horses that have stampeded away from the gate. Rather interesting for a herd animal. . .

LOL...horses, gotta love 'em.

The reason behind Chautauqua's stubborn showing
All eyes will be on champion sprinter Chautauqua come 8:51am at Warwick Farm on Monday, as he seeks to confirm he can resume in Saturday's Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

But his owner Rupert Legh explained what actually happened in the gates at Randwick last Tuesday, when Chautauqua was left in the stalls in back-to-back trials which left stewards to demand he trial to their satisfaction prior to his autumn resumption.

"It's a funny one - we all have bad hair days, don't we?" Legh told RSN 927's Talking Horses on Sunday morning.

"I think it's the best photograph of all, from Gai Waterhouse's photographer.

"He's looking at the camera - and that camera would not normally be there on raceday, or on any day when they have trials.

"If there's a camera, it's normally to the right, when they jump out the Sydney way of going.

"But this camera is to his left, he's got his eyes square on the camera as if to say, 'You shouldn't be there, and I'm not jumping out of these gates'.

"It's the best photo you'll ever see.

"He's such a peculiar animal, if you change things for him, he loses it - he gets pretty cranky, he's got a mind of his own.

"I think it's a combination of two things - one, the photographer. People might laugh, but that's just the quirky nature of the horse.

"And secondly, he'd never been to Randwick in his life to have a jump-out or a trial, he's in a different part of the track, and he was looking around. It was one of those days that wasn't normal to him.

"So he decided I'm not jumping out, this just isn't right.

"Since then, the horse has been out of the gates, and not a problem at all... we're putting it down to one of those days, with a combination of a few things, and hopefully tomorrow morning, he jumps out and gives the people some peace in the mind that all's well with him to get him to the Canterbury Stakes on Saturday."

Chautauqua is down to trial in heat number four at 8:51am, with jockey Brenton Avdulla to guide him in the 800m trial. The mighty grey trialled beautifully the same track/trip on February 15.

Oh dear...

Chautauqua Refuses Again
For the third time in nine days, champion sprinter Chautauqua (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) refused to jump from the barriers during a trial on Thursday at Rosehill. Chautauqua was given two chances to trial at Randwick on Feb. 27 and stayed in the gates both times. The 7-year-old gelding has now been banned from racing in Sydney until he completes two successful barrier trials. Co-owner Rupert Legh told Racing.com Chautauqua would be sent to Melbourne to trial next Friday.

“He will get a change of environment, he will probably be on a truck today or tomorrow to Melbourne and have a jump out next Friday at Flemington. Hopefully fingers crossed it is one of those incidents we can get out of his head quickly. We don’t want him to develop bad habits.”

“If he doesn’t jump next Friday, then it would be to the paddock, give him a good freshen up and start again,” Legh added.

Chautauqua is being targeted at a fourth straight G1 TJ Smith S. at The Championships at Randwick on Apr. 7.

He refused twice at Randwick and then was given "a change of environment" at Rosehill...and still put it in Park.
Leigh sounds like he's trying to pretend that what is happening isn't actually happening. This is a Group 1, experienced sprinter for whom barrier trials are old hat. If he's refusing to even leave the gate, IMHO he has clearly filed for his retirement and would now like to draw his well-earned pension, thank you very much. :P

He isn't exactly a spring chicken, and has won so much and become such a fan favourite. I hope his connections just call it a day and send him to Living Legends for a well earned retirement.

I don't think too many people remember Matuszak (Bernardini), who at the beginning of his career danced on the big stage (Remsen, Jerome, Belmont S. (DNF)) under the care of Bill Mott, but the now 7yo gelded warrior has steadily dropped in the claiming ranks and is entered in Race 1 at Will Rogers Downs this Tuesday (3/13/18).
Looks like he struggled through his Oaklawn Park claiming races this year, and was put on the bus to WRD. Next stop - Rillito? Good luck to him, and I hope he stays safe.

Masochistic was last in the Sensational Star, eased up on as he passed the wire. :(
The horse just isn't the same G1 sprinter that we knew from 2016 or even 2017. Sadly, even Bsquared can't seem to get the gelding right; maybe his connections should be calling Old Friends to see if the retirement facility has room for this fellow.
