Bob didn't want to build up any early Derby hype. You know how he likes to fly under the radar and stay out of the spotlight.

With rain in the forecast for Monday night at Santa Anita, trainer Bob Baffert moved up a planned work for Justify by a day or two, and he went an effortless five furlongs in 1:01.40 Monday under jockey Drayden Van Dyke shortly after the first renovation break at 6:30.

Justify got a Beyer Speed Figure of 104 for the his maiden win eight days ago. He is likely to make his next start in the Sunland Derby on March 25. That race offers 50 points to the winner towards a berth in the Kentucky Derby. But Baffert is known to call audibles.

He was just floating in his work on Monday. He really is a beautiful mover.

I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Dylan Davis, who has been on fire at Aqueduct this winter, has picked up a plum assignment for the Gotham Stakes. He has been tabbed to ride San Vicente winner Kanthaka in that March 10 race at Aqueduct, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Monday.

"We got the leading rider there," Hollendorfer said.

Kanthaka was ridden by Flavien Prat in the San Vicente, but Prat is committed to stay at Santa Anita on March 10 for a blockbuster card, headed by the Santa Anita Handicap. Prat will ride male turf champ World Approval in the Kilroe Mile that day.

From Privman @ DRF
Bolt d'Oro worked six furlongs from the gate officially in 1:12 on Monday morning at Santa Anita, his penultimate drill in preparation for his 3yo debut in the San Felipe Stakes on March 10.

Jockey Javier Castellano was aboard for the work. He told me Bolt d'Oro "kind of fell asleep a little bit" in the gate, awaiting the start after loading. He said a few strides into the work, "he jumped right in the bridle."

Private clocker Gary Young had a final time of 1:12.40, with fractions of 24, 35.60, 47.60, 1:00.40, a seven-furlong gallop out in 1:25.20, and a mile in 1:40.40.

Castellano knuckled down on Bolt d'Oro approaching the wire to have him go out.

This was the main work for Bolt d'Oro prior to the San Felipe. His owner and trainer, Mick Ruis, told me he'd work again on Sunday, an easy half-mile, and that'll be that.
