Re: Beach Bum

1997 seems like "recent" to me these days! Hey, he was racing LESS than 20 years ago!

Re: 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale

Yeah, I'd have taken the $1,700,000 and run--even a 2021 yearling by Tapit or MdO would be no guarantee to sell for more. But you let the dice fall wrong once, you keep chasing it. . .

Remembering my avatar

This is very personal, but 51 years ago Native Diver ran his last race before succumbing to colic 9 days later. That race was the Del Mar Handicap--then run at 9F. He carried 130 pounds and won by over 4 lengths wire to wire in 1.46.4. At 8 years old. In July he won his third Hollywood Gold Cup, 10F...

Re: 2018 foals

The Bobby's Kitten foal is very attractive. I'm not au courant with everything in South Africa although I was in and out of Johannesburg in August. The country's past was tragic and horrible. They are struggling to find a path. It is not always going to be pretty. The hope is for some racial balance...

Re: Trials and Tribulations of Mick Ruis

I never got the Ruis love. All that feel-good garbage about buying millions of dollars' worth of horses to get his daughter launched--apparently just a front.

Re: 2018 Two-year-olds

Norfolk! that's it, thanks. I knew the filly race used to be the Oak Leaf but the Norfolk wouldn't come to me. I'm not always a fan of changing race names but "Frontrunner," referring to the track restaurant, is no loss at all!

I'm far from an expert but his shoulder angle looks very nice. I've always understood that the shoulder governs the forearm stride (happy to be instructed).

Re: 2018 Two-year-olds

Game Winner's a hunk, and I love the pedigree (Candy Ride x an AP Indy mare). I just wonder if he's an early-mature juvenile and they'll catch up to him. Baffert also has two other recent impressive debut winners--Tale of the Union (Union Rags) and Magic on Tap (Tapit). The American Pharaoh (formerl...

Re: Welcome to Del Mar 2018

Definitely scary and weird to hear the chaos live, if briefly. I'm going down tomorrow for closing day--hope all is good. I used to love it when Del Mar closed on Wednesday after Labor Day--a pleasantly exhausted day as everyone put the end to the season.

Re: Welcome to Del Mar 2018

They have private security (think, crotchety retirees) doing sometimes rigorous, sometimes sporadic, bag searches. But no patdowns, in my experience.

Oddly enough (or maybe not), Baffert also trained a "Beach Bum" of a slightly earlier vintage, who had a brief but promising career. :(
