Re: Travers 2018

Elate's stride was definitely affected. You can tell in the pan and I could tell in real time that she lost momentum for a step. It's disputable and one of those calls that wouldn't have been egregious either way, but to me it sort of weakened the excitement of the race. That being said, there have ...

Re: Travers 2018

It sure looked like every horse who got a taste of the kickback quit early into the race. Good Magic, who was basically eased, was also taken very wide into the first turn by Tenfold, who ran pretty erratically in spots during the race. Mendelssohn ran fine I guess but he didn't put up much resistan...

Re: Travers 2018

All credit to Catholic Boy as a multi-surface wonder, but that was an ugly race aside from the winner.

Re: Travers 2018

Gronk looked spectacular on Belmont day and doesn't look any worse here from what I can tell. He's massive, gorgeous, and well balanced despite his size. Would love to see him run to his looks here.

Re: Travers 2018

What a great ride by Julien on Glorious Empire. He had the horse, but he gave that horse the best chance imaginable. Was hoping that watching the undercard would help me figure out the Travers, but I still have no idea. Good Magic would be the least surprising winner, but is he that much better than...

Re: Travers 2018

Whitmore is super cool.

Will have to rewatch, but it looked like City of Light got a brutal ride. He was just insanely wide the whole way around.

Re: Travers 2018

What could have been a great stretch duel sullied a bit by the fact that the rail is clearly a better place to be and Elate definitely lost momentum from that bump.

Re: Breeders Cup Upcoming Venues

I haven't looked at turf races, but there is definitely a local bias in BC dirt races held on the west coast. There have been visible trends at all three California venues (SA, Del Mar, and Hollywood), and it is especially pronounced in route races. I posted a big analysis last year and will try to ...

Re: Why does the horse on the outside win so much

Looks like others have covered it already, but it's hard to overstate how mentally (and sometimes physically) difficult it is to be pinned on the rail by another horse, whether you're on the lead or trying to make a late move turning for home. Mine that Bird is a great example, but Street Sense's 20...

Re: 2018 Pacific Classic @ Del Mar G1 $1MM

Absolutely fantastic stuff, Curtis. Thank you so much for sharing it. I'll check out that book you mentioned for sure, but there's nothing like talking with people directly about these things. I could listen to this all day. Aside from Vigors, who features pretty prominently in A Decade of Champions...

Re: 2018 Pacific Classic @ Del Mar G1 $1MM

That's totally fair, and there's also the unknown element of the remaining 3yo crop. If Good Magic does anything of note in unrestricted company, that'll be it- and that's perfectly fine, because evaluating the class of the TC is often difficult at best and his quality is the biggest remaining wild ...

Re: 2018 Pacific Classic @ Del Mar G1 $1MM

I didn't know about Crystal Water; that's really interesting! I think the parallels and differences between 1977 and today make for a fun thought experiment and an interesting commentary on the ways in which the sport has changed. I completely agree that Accelerate hasn't beaten anything and I'm not...

Re: 2018 Pacific Classic @ Del Mar G1 $1MM

In 1977 the champion older male was Forego, who won two G1s (the Met Mile and the Woodward) along with a G3 and allowance win and two G1 placings. Accelerate, with that hypothetical future campaign, would win five G1s with a G2 and a G2 placing, including a win in the definitive year-end championshi...

Re: Travers 2018

Man, what a huge disappointment. Hofburg was a perfect Travers horse and Mott had been excited about the race all year.

At least the field is still going to be interesting. A lot of enigmas in there.

Re: 2018 Pacific Classic @ Del Mar G1 $1MM

I disagree. A horse wins the Big Cap, Gold Cup, Pacific Classic, Awesome Again, and BC Classic in one year - that’s quite a feat, he trumps the TC winner who never raced past June and didn’t beat older stakes horses. Of course, I’m not convinced he can do it.#sadlercurse Oh I fully agree! I don't t...

Re: Obscure Trivia Question

Interesting; I didn't know it was that rare.

If we expand it to the entire TC, I know Palace Malice broke his maiden on the dirt there at two.

Re: 2018 Pacific Classic @ Del Mar G1 $1MM

Arrogate ran two of the best races in modern history and soundly beat the only other HOTY contender on the square in the championship event. I understand why he didn't get it, but he would have been a fully deserving HOTY and his situation really wasn't comparable to Justify's. I'm still not an Acce...

Re: Breeders Cup Upcoming Venues

- I don't think NYRA wants to be bothered with hosting. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see them put on a competing day very soon to satisfy their own horsemen. Repole got laughed at for suggesting as much a few years back, but it does seem like an increasingly logical step for NY horsemen. NYRA...

Re: Breeders Cup Upcoming Venues

Whenever the BC is hosted by Santa Anita, the positive buzz in the barn area is at a very high pitch. I've heard way too many times from the Euros that they are so pleased with the track, weather and the layout of Santa Anita as well. They absolutely love it as well as the social media, more specif...

Re: Breeders Cup Upcoming Venues

I always thought the weather complaint was weird, given that Keeneland and Churchill can get just as cold on a bad day, Monmouth's BC was very formful and a great experience for fans regardless of the rain, and California does have a tendency to catch on fire and/or give horses heat stroke. After a ...
