Re: BaroqueAgain?????

Thank you for reaching out to her on everyone's behalf, Kurenai. I'm sure she has far more important things to worry about than a horse racing forum, but I hope she knows that many of us are willing to help with whatever she needs. I did do some sleuthing and I think it's unlikely that she was a vic...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Alright then, let's just shut the sport down. This whole situation is the exact thing we've collectively feared and complained about for years, but now that it's actually happened, we're supposed to just... shut up and be grateful for it? After we watched a TC winner- the first in nearly four decade...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

One things that mystifies me is how willing some racing fans are to debase themselves and conflate hoarding wealth with "winning." The sport is call horse racing, and you win by running in races. I'm not going to thank a bunch of already-rich people for denying me the chance to witness the career of...

Re: Happiness

Thank you Sparrow Castle! It's funny, I only ever got the chance to teach because I joined a lab that was just starting out and had no money. Six years later, I finally get to do the fun part for a living. A few people have been a bit judgmental about my choice to leave research, but you're absolute...

Thank you! I should add it's not a tenured position, but I was lucky enough to skip adjuncting and go straight to full-time faculty. It still hasn't really sunk in yet.

Re: Happiness

Just finished/survived my first semester teaching (part-time) as a full professor. I can't believe I get to do this full-time starting in the spring. There's just nothing more joyful and rewarding than teaching.

Re: 2019 Graded Stakes

I think the US could cut their graded stakes in half and there would still be too many. http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/foal-crop-may-hit-53-year-low-in-2018/ I completely agree. And, even if not for the foal crop size (which I believe has dropped every year since ~2005) there are still way to...

Re: 2019 Graded Stakes

After reading another handwringing article, this time by Haskin ( http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2018/12/02/Weep-No-More-For-Graded-Stakes-Committee.aspx ), I just need to point out that the Stephen Foster has only been a G1 since 2002, while the Zenyatta/Lady's Sec...

Re: 2019 Graded Stakes

Watchmaker tends to be a traditionalist who gets very upset when things change (see also: his argument from a few weeks ago that Accelerate getting HOTY would somehow signal the death of the sport). Generally speaking, there are no "true Grade 1 performers" in the turf sprint division because there ...

Re: 2019 Graded Stakes

A bit sad to see the Stephen Foster and Beldame downgraded, but can't argue it. Belmont Day gets a boon, two more G1s. Just wish the quality of the fan experience there scaled with the quality of the racing. And I'm thrilled to see the huge boosts to turf sprinting. It's about time that division gai...

Re: Racing in Japan

It's not "about" anything. It's 2400 meters, a distance more commonly run than 1 1/2 miles throughout the world. It comes out to approximately 11.93f, about 45 feet shorter. If you take the average furlong to be 12 seconds, that means 2400m races should be about ~0.84 seconds faster than 12f races. ...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Slew’s times were not eye opening but his Derby and Preakness were. Had Secretariat not existed, Slew wouldn’t have needed the campaign at four to be great. On the topic of time, the horse that owns the fastest two-turn dirt mile in history was in for 10k on Monday at Del Mar and was claimed. It’s ...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Proof? All things are to be taken in context. There is no real way to judge this crop of 3yo’s until next year around this time. Accelerate stuck it out and kept racing after the best of his crop went to the shed. In alphabetical order, I would take Arrogate, Exaggerate, Gun Runner and Nyquist over...

Re: Mendelssohn

It does seem odd that he's been continually blasted to the front. Is he definitely retiring after this year? It would be a shame; I think he's demonstrably better now than he was in the first half of the year. Really strikes me as a horse who would thrive at four, especially if he's allowed to relax...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

You can't tell how good a crop is during the first half of the year, and this one almost completely fell apart. Mendelssohn was the best left standing at the end of the year, but he was a complete non-factor in the Derby. In fact, I believe the only open stakes winner from the entire TC was Promises...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

For reference RE: Accelerate's accomplishments, I believe Accelerate is the first horse to win three G1s at 10f en route to a victory in the Classic since Cigar in 1995. Moreover, to find another Classic winner with 5 or more open G1 wins on the year, one has to go back to... Cigar, again. The only ...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Justify's Derby was very good, and by far his best TC race. In the Preakness he was second-best to Good Magic (who was on the worst part of the track, facing outside pressure while on the lead for the first time, only beaten a length), and he would have been beaten by... probably every Preakness win...
