Re: horses with unique coloring/facial markings

Absolutely NOT sabino, as there is NO SB1 in thoroughbreds... And again, SP is a far more extreme patterned version here. I assumed KIT mutation as TBs have a notoriously unstable KIT, and it's a pattern that's cropped up in several other TBs. So far, not tested positive for SW1, 2,3 or 4. Hopefull...

Re: Stallion News

Hinchinbrook Dies Following Exercise Accident Yarraman Park Stud has been dealt a huge blow on the eve of the Southern Hemisphere breeding season with the sudden and freak death of their top-class stallion Hinchinbrook. The son of Fastnet Rock would have been entering his eighth year at stud, but d...

Re: 2018 foals

Right now at 7:50PM eastern time, Bird Town looks fine. She is standing and looking out the door that goes outside to the paddocks. There is a breeze blowing into her stall, gently ruffling her mane and forelock. She seems content. Her ribs are showing a bit. I don't know if that's normal for a pre...

Re: DSLD: a hereditary disease

Yes, hereditary--in warmbloods.

It seems a huge stretch to try and include Unbridled's Song here when the unsoundness his offspring displayed had nothing to do with the symptoms of DSLD.

Re: 2018 foals

This might be a dumb question but does a foal only get its nutrition from the mother or will it also eat hay? For the first couple weeks, the foals are mostly just copying their dams and picking up the hay (or grass) and carrying it around. They don't eat enough to get any nutrition from it. By a m...

Re: 2018 foals

I have a question, were La Verdad and her filly not turned out today because of the weather or because the filly is a newborn? Or a combination of both? And when do you think they will be turned out? Different farms do things differently so I can't predict what will happen with La Verdad, but our f...

Sending positive thoughts for the Its In His Kiss foal
They would bring her in. I'm sure someone is keeping an eye on her.

lurkey mclurker wrote:*Weeks* late?!?! Wow. :o
"Normal" gestation for a horse is 320 to 370 days. Most people use day 340 as their approximate due date. For a mare to foal on a day in the 350s (which would qualify as "weeks late") is not at all unusual.

I love that they put a bed of straw for the foals to sleep in when they're out in the snow.

Thank you Honor Code. I also posted a link to that confo video as a way to let people see the truth for themselves. Didn't help as later he was called "Daffy Duck." Hence my "ladies and gentlemen" retort. Nobody disputes that California Chrome is a handsome, extremely talented racehorse. I'm not su...

Re: When choosing a mare...TrueNicks or conformation?

I had heard that it wasn't as common any more. It's a nice trend, surprising in light of how the sales emphasize perfect conformation etc. Anyway, in your own opinion/experience-would you describe any current kentucky stallions as having "perfect" or maybe "almost perfect" conformation? The most "p...

Just like people, some horses carry more weight than others. Regardless of age.

Re: When choosing a mare...TrueNicks or conformation?

TBird: By the time a stallion gets to a stud farm, he will likely have passed through several sets of hands and information like that gets lost along the way. One more reason why it would be good to have a set of nationwide rules to insure that a horse's medical records - from foal to breeding farm...

Re: When choosing a mare...TrueNicks or conformation?

So, now that the fireworks have calmed down a bit... Genuine question here. How would a breeder/prospective breeder judge whether a horse has genetically crooked legs(like Curlin and his mother) or somatic crooked legs(Chrome in the womb? Haven’t see his mother) I also hear a lot of foals have corr...
