Re: Horrible Names For Horses

i prefer names that aren't pedigree oriented. moscow burning - MOSCOW ballet x BURNING desire ah yes, very creative. A+. such imagination. I like names that are pedigree oriented, but take a bit of thought as well. For instance there were two fillies by Man o' War out of a mare called The Nu...

Re: Belmont Saturday Watchalong thread

With all the facts and figures being thrown about, I'm surprised no one mentioned that Justify is only the 3rd Triple Crown winner that was not a home-bred. The other 2 - Sir Barton (1919) and Seattle Slew (1977). So both undefeated Triple Crown winners were purchased at auction. (Sir Barton was pur...

Re: horses with unique coloring/facial markings

Regarding Milkie, if I remember correctly, the Jockey Club didn't want to register him, but his sire, Deer Lodge had a differently shaped front hoof that he passed along to all his offspring, and Milkie had the same same shaped front hoof, which proved his paternity.

Re: Derby Point Races 2018

Thought I'd add some data regarding month born. I went back through my info and found the birth months for all the NOMINEES to the Triple Crown races for 2014-2018. I don't have info at hand for earlier years, but thought this might be of interest. 2018: 360 early, 10 late, 370 total nominations. ea...

Re: DSLD: a hereditary disease

DSLD/EPSA affects a horse systemically, i.e. throughout the body, and affects the aorta and coronary arteries, per article at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1459153/.

Could this be a cause of the 'heart attacks' that cause young horses to suddenly collapse and die?

Just a thought.

Re: horses with unique coloring/facial markings

I just watched a couple of the dam's race replays on Twinspires. She is dark bay/brown with a average size blaze and maybe some socks. Its pretty hard to tell with the quality but didn't see anything unusual and I was able to see both sides of her. Since both parents were solid, it seems that she's...

Re: horses with unique coloring/facial markings

PAINTING THE SKY sure has a pretty head and those photos are wonderful. So good to see a Thoroughbred going on to a second career. The leader of the U.S. polo team visited Chrome toward the end of his racing career, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of Chrome's foals wind up as polo ponies. For th...

I know it was in 1981, 22 horses entered, 21 ran; Pleasant Colony won. Not sure what the circumstances were, though.

This was posted in the 'In Memoriam 2018' thread' - Dreaming of Anna, champion 2-year-old filly of 2006, died January 9 of a ruptured aorta. She was only 14.

It was originally reported in the DRF.

An updated article is on page 7 of the Bloodhorse Daily PDF

Re: Coat Colors in Foreign Languages

Would anyone have information on common coat colors in foreign languages and their translations into English? I'm trying to figure out what the abbreviations might be, too. We have 'b' for 'bay' and 'ch' for chestnut, and 'blk' for black, and so on. That kind of thing in another language can be ver...

Re: 2017 TBC Breeders' Cup Pool Contest

Congrats Ballerina!

My Mid-pack finish wasn't too bad. I did better actually betting the races.

I nearly broke even (which is usually my goal), and the money I did lose was about what it would cost going out for an evening of entertainment!

I think they need to update the color on Hip 93, colt by Candy Ride (ARG) o/o Stage Stop; he's listed as chestnut, but is definitely gray.

For the news of such a top-class mare's death to go completely unreported, except for the paperwork submitted to their Jockey club... I just ran across a 2017 Jockey Club death report for Pike Place Dancer. She won the 1996 Kentucky Oaks, so you'd think it would have rated a paragraph or tw...

There's a 2017 death report filed with the Jockey Club for Pike Place Dancer, winner of the 1996 Kentucky Oaks. I haven't seen any articles about it, though.
